Google’s first carbon capture and storage project

Google has partnered with Low Carbon Infrastructure (LCI) to develop the Broadwing Energy project, a natural gas power plant in Decatur, Illinois, featuring carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, marking the company’s first corporate agreement of this kind.

The facility is designed to capture approximately 90% of its carbon dioxide emissions for permanent underground storage, leveraging an existing industrial site operated by ADM which has experience with CO2 sequestration.

Google plans to purchase the majority of the plant’s power to support its Midwest data centers and hopes its involvement will accelerate the commercial viability and widespread adoption of CCS technology. Read the full details at Google Blog.
